How to Join the Indian Paranormal Society

13 October 2026 6 min readBY RITH DEB
QUICK ANSWER

IPS's own website points aspiring researchers to one public starting point: the G.R.I.P Academy Orientation Course, IPS's online training course. IPS invites anyone who thinks they have "what it takes to be a researcher" to "Enrol in GRIP Academy's Orientation Course and find out." IPS does not publish its criteria for moving on to the team, so start with GRIP, build real investigation skills, and contact IPS directly about membership.

Who does the Indian Paranormal Society take on?

IPS describes its team as people who investigate "scientifically" while respecting metaphysical perspectives, and who hold to its stated values:

  • Professionalism: respect for "both the client and the client's property", conducted "in professional and courteous manner"
  • Respect for fellow members
  • Respect and cooperation with other paranormal investigation groups
  • Ethical research: finding answers and drawing conclusions "honestly and without fabrication"
  • Reputation: "we safeguard our reputation in the paranormal field above all else"

IPS does not publish eligibility rules such as age, qualifications or location.

The official path: G.R.I.P Academy orientation course

G.R.I.P stands for Ghost Research & Investigators of Paranormal Academy, IPS's training academy. According to IPS's G.R.I.P Academy page, the Beginners (Orientation) Course is online and covers:

  • Who is a Paranormal Investigator?
  • Scientific and Religious Approach
  • The Nature of Ghosts, Spirits and Haunting
  • Orbs and their relevance in paranormal research
  • Importance of electromagnetic fields (EMF)
  • Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP)
  • Tools and equipment used for paranormal research
  • Performing investigations
  • How to analyse evidence

IPS says the course is "primarily theoretical". Students gain applied experience by conducting a mock investigation and preparing a detailed report. The course includes a PDF guide, a sample investigation report and a mock assignment. IPS states that a certificate of completion is given on submission of the assignment and mock investigation.

Step by step

  • 1. Read IPS's About page and values.
  • 2. Enrol in the G.R.I.P Academy Orientation Course through the official IPS academy page.
  • 3. Complete the course material, the mock investigation and the report.
  • 4. Contact IPS through its official Contact page or at indianparanormalsociety@gmail.com to ask about next steps.

Completing GRIP is how IPS invites people to "find out" whether research suits them. IPS does not publicly promise that completing it leads to team membership.

Skills to build before you apply

These are the skills that matter in real investigations, whichever route you take:

  • Intellectual honesty: reporting what the evidence shows, even when it isn't what you hoped.
  • Comfort with uncertainty: many cases end inconclusive, and you document them anyway.
  • Methodological discipline: baseline first, controlled collection, natural explanations ruled out before anything else.
  • Client interviews: calm, careful questioning of people who are frightened.
  • Evidence analysis: audio, video and instrument data checked against the baseline.
  • Science of natural causes: infrasound, carbon monoxide and EMF.

You don't need a particular degree. Gaurav Tiwari trained in aviation, Rith came from a technology background, and IPS members over the years have included engineers, doctors, teachers and people from non-technical fields. See also Can Anyone Become a Paranormal Investigator in India?

What being on the IPS team is like: a core member's view

Rith Deb is a core team member of the Indian Paranormal Society and was directly mentored by Gaurav Tiwari. Here is how he describes the reality of the work, in his own words on rithdeb.com:

  • "The case is not about you." In Rith's words: "The moment I walk into a location with a conclusion already forming, I have failed the people who called me."
  • Documentation is the work. "Every investigation I run has a written case file — equipment readings, environmental conditions, follow-up notes. It is not glamorous work. It is the work that remains."
  • Ego is the risk. The investigators who last "are the ones who checked their ego at the door from the beginning."
  • Most nights are undramatic. Many cases end with an environmental explanation, such as a faulty stove or poor ventilation, rather than footage.

IPS's own Case Files page sets the boundary clearly: "We do not claim to exorcise or eliminate paranormal entities. Our role is to investigate, document, and support individuals through education and awareness."

Ethics and expectations

  • Respect the client, their property and their beliefs.
  • Never perform rituals, sell "remedies" or claim to remove entities.
  • Keep locations and people confidential unless they choose otherwise.
  • Label inconclusive evidence as inconclusive, and never stage or exaggerate.
  • Respect other investigation groups, as IPS's own values require.

Preparing with Rith Deb's beginner course

If you want structured preparation before or alongside GRIP, Rith's Ghost Hunting for Beginners course covers paranormal fundamentals, types of haunting, introductory equipment (EMF, EVP, thermal), the investigation process, evidence and ethics. It runs online in Hindi and English.

To be clear: Rith Deb Paranormal Academy courses are Rith's own programme, taught following IPS methodology. They are not an IPS or G.R.I.P course, they are not a route to IPS membership, and they do not replace GRIP. Think of them as preparation. Course fees will be announced at the Academy launch, with Founders' pricing for early members (waitlist).
