The Indian Paranormal Society: From Gaurav Tiwari to Today
The Indian Paranormal Society (IPS) is an Indian paranormal research organisation founded by Gaurav Tiwari on 11 April 2009. IPS investigates reported paranormal events across India. It combines scientific equipment with a stated approach of logical evaluation, critical thinking and forensic-science principles, and its mission is to break the stigma and superstition around the paranormal. IPS is still active, and its training course is the G.R.I.P Academy.

What is the Indian Paranormal Society?
The Indian Paranormal Society (IPS) is a paranormal research team that investigates, documents and analyses reported paranormal phenomena in India. On its homepage, IPS calls itself "India's First Professional Paranormal Research Team" and uses the line "What you fear, we chase."
IPS describes its focus as metaphysics and psychology "with respect to paranormal studies/research". It says it aims "to shun myths/superstitions by logical evaluation, critical thinking and applying principles of forensic science." (IPS About)
When was IPS founded, and by whom?
IPS was founded on 11 April 2009 by Gaurav Tiwari, whom the IPS site calls Rev. Gaurav Tiwari. IPS credits him with "pioneering metaphysical and anomalous research around the globe, with special focus on India." Gaurav Tiwari trained in aviation before he turned to paranormal research.
His motto, "Knowledge cancels Fear," is still quoted on the IPS site as the guide to its mission: helping people overcome fear of the unknown through education, research and scientific investigation.
IPS's homepage also carries one of his best-known lines:
"Ghosts or 'consciousness' of human beings that survives physical death have no relation with day or night. Paranormal activity is independent of time. But we investigate at night because the environment is silent." — Gaurav Tiwari, as quoted by the Indian Paranormal Society
The mission of the Indian Paranormal Society
IPS states its mission as:
"To discover more about the human condition, life, the universe, and the Greater Scheme of Things by 'scientifically' investigating unusual and mysterious events and happenings, and to help others in the process."
The homepage adds two founding aims: "to break the social stigma and clear up superstitions surrounding the paranormal". It also aims to help people "explore paranormal investigation while separating fact from myth."
IPS principles (as listed by IPS)
- Scientific methodology with respect for metaphysical perspectives
- Logical evaluation and critical thinking to shun myths and superstitions
- Applying principles of forensic science to paranormal investigations
- Education to help people overcome fear of the unknown
IPS values (summarised from IPS)
- Professionalism, and respect for clients and their property
- Respect for fellow members
- Respect for, and cooperation with, other paranormal investigation groups
- Ethical research: finding answers and drawing conclusions "honestly and without fabrication"

How the Indian Paranormal Society investigates
IPS says its process "is designed to eliminate natural explanations before considering paranormal causes." IPS lists six stages (IPS Investigations):
IPS says it maintains controlled conditions, documents all findings and analyses evidence critically, "so that conclusions are based on objective data rather than subjective experiences."
Equipment IPS lists: EMF meters, EVP recorders, thermal imaging cameras, K2 meters, spirit boxes, motion sensors, REM pods, infrared cameras and laser grids.
What IPS does not do: its Case Files page states, "We do not claim to exorcise or eliminate paranormal entities. Our role is to investigate, document, and support individuals through education and awareness."
For how the same evidence-first approach works in practice, see Paranormal Investigation: Step by Step.
- 1. Initial contact and briefing
- 2. Pre-investigation assessment
- 3. On-site investigation
- 4. Evidence analysis
- 5. Client consultation
- 6. Follow-up support
Well-known IPS case files
IPS's public Case Files page features these locations:
Each IPS case file lists the reported activity, the findings and a status. Read the findings in IPS's own words on its site. They are IPS's interpretations, and this page does not restate them as conclusions.
- Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan. IPS notes that government-restricted night-time access limited the investigation.
- Kuldhara Village, Rajasthan
- Mukesh Mill, Mumbai
- Tunnel 33, Shimla
- Lambi Dehar Mines, Uttarakhand. IPS marks the site as unsafe.
Books and the Bhay series
The IPS homepage recommends three books under "Books you must read":
On screen, there is the Amazon MX Player series Bhay: The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery. Rith Deb contributed to the research behind it.

IPS today: a core team member's view
IPS is active in 2026. Its website lists a current core team, a live case-report form, the G.R.I.P Academy course, and a blog with new posts through mid-2026.
As a core team member of the Indian Paranormal Society, and someone who was directly mentored by Gaurav Tiwari, Rith Deb describes the standard IPS carries forward simply: evidence before conclusion, and documentation that outlasts any single investigator. Rith follows IPS methodology in his own case work and in how he teaches.
Rith also runs his own online academy, the Rith Deb Paranormal Academy (paranormal investigation course in India). It is taught following IPS methodology, but it is not an IPS programme and does not grant IPS membership. Fees will be announced at the Academy launch, with Founders' pricing for early members (waitlist). Beginners can start with How to Become a Paranormal Investigator in India.
