Can Anyone Become a Paranormal Investigator in India? My Honest Answer

I get asked this question constantly. In DMs, after talks, in the comments on my videos. "Can I become a paranormal investigator? Is it something anyone can do?"

The short version: yes, with conditions. Here is the longer, more useful version.

Before I answer, I need to address what people imagine when they say they want to become a paranormal investigator. They picture: walking into dark buildings with cameras rolling. Capturing something terrifying on film. Building a following around unexplained encounters.

That picture is built almost entirely by entertainment content — ghost-hunting TV shows, YouTube channels, horror series on OTT platforms. It is a version of the job optimised for viewer engagement, not for actual investigation.

The real job looks different. It looks like arriving at a location and spending the first hour documenting baseline environmental conditions. It looks like writing case reports. It looks like telling a family who called you in genuine fear that what they have is a carbon monoxide problem, not a ghost — and that they need to replace their stove and see a doctor.

There is no required educational background. Gaurav Tiwari, who founded the Indian Paranormal Society, trained as a pilot. I came from a technology background. IPS members across the years have included engineers, doctors, teachers, and people from no technical field at all.

What matters is a specific combination of characteristics that determines whether someone will be effective and ethical in this work:

• Intellectual honesty. Can you investigate something you want to believe in and still report honestly when the evidence doesn't support it? Confirmation bias is one of the biggest problems in this field.
• Comfort with uncertainty. A significant portion of genuine investigation ends without a clear conclusion. You document anomalies you cannot explain. You file them. You move on.
• Methodological discipline. The order in which you set up equipment, establish baselines, document conditions and collect evidence is not arbitrary. It prevents contamination and false positives.
• The ability to work with people in distress. The people who contact paranormal investigators are scared. You need to be calm, professional, and genuinely care about their welfare — not just the investigation.

If your primary motivation is building a social media following, do not pursue serious paranormal investigation. You will cut corners for content. You will sensationalise ambiguous evidence because dramatic footage performs better than honest documentation. The incentive structure of content creation is fundamentally at odds with rigorous investigation.

That does not mean investigators cannot create content. I create content. But the investigation comes first and the content comes from what the investigation actually produces. That order is non-negotiable.

If you are not willing to accept that the vast majority of cases will not produce anything dramatic: do not pursue this. The field has enough people who manufacture drama. It needs more people who are comfortable with the undramatic truth.

The framework Gaurav Tiwari built covers case intake, environmental baseline documentation, equipment use, audio and visual evidence standards, report writing, client communication, and ethics.

• Beginner (₹1,499): Introduction to methodology. What paranormal investigation actually is vs what media portrays. Basic equipment literacy. How to document initial observations.
• Intermediate: Field techniques. Equipment in practice. How to establish environmental baselines. Reading EMF, thermal and audio data. Common false positives.
• Advanced: Case analysis. Evidence assessment. Understanding peer-reviewed literature on infrasound, EMF and CO. Building your own documentation system.
• Masterclass (₹4,999): Full case management. From intake to report. Handling sensitive client situations. Building credibility in the field.

Can anyone become a paranormal investigator in India? Anyone can call themselves one. The title is not regulated. You can pick up a camera tonight and describe yourself as a paranormal investigator by morning.

But can anyone become a competent, ethical, credible paranormal investigator who actually helps the people who come to them? No. Not without training. Not without developing the methodological discipline that only comes from doing the work properly and being corrected when you do it wrong.

The good news: these are learnable. All of them. The motivation has to come from you. The methodology — I can teach you that.
